The Hammer Band Project
The Hammer Band, created by renowned violinist Moshe Hammer, is designed to help at risk elementary school children connect with music. The purpose of the Hammer Band Research Project is to study the impact of participation in the community of the band on students. Such a study is particularly important, given that instrumental music instruction (especially in the stringed instruments) is no longer regularly taught in most public schools. This means that students opportunities to experience differentiated instruction methods, to engage in multi-modal meaning-making, and to consider playing an instrument are diminished.
